How to set a default value for Mailchimp fields

Mailchimp allows a very useful feature called Merge Tags. Merge Tags are a means of inserting data from our subscribers list into a Campaign (a Campaign is the email newsletter that is sent to your subscribers). This is extremely useful for personalising Campaigns such as inserting the recipients first name into the email.

But what if we don’t have the first name (or any other data where we’re using a Merge Tag) of all recipients. Can merge tags still be used effectively? Fortunately it’s really simple to set a default value for a field so that the default value shows for the merge tag if data don’t exist for that subscriber in your List.

Instructions to set a default value for Merge Tags in Mailchimp

Follow these steps to insert a value to be used in your Merge Tag should the data not exist in your subscriber list.

  1. Log into Mailchimp.
  2. Click Lists.
  3. Click your list name.
  4. Click Signup forms.
  5. Click General forms.
  6. Click the field to which you want to add a default value.
  7. In the default merge tag value field enter the value you want to appear as the default.
  8. Click Save Field.

That’s all there is to it. We are Mailchimp Experts and Mailchimp will give you a 50% discount for six months for using our Mailchimp services.
