What are the list limits in Mailchimp?

Mailchimp is mighty powerful. It’s quite astonishing how specific audiences may be targeted in a campaign using Groups and/or Segments. Of course, the more relevant the email newsletter is to the recipient, the more likely that person is to take action such as buy or click. As a very brief introduction here is the definition of Mailchimp Groups and Mailchimp Segments (definitions provided by me and not by Mailchimp) :

Mailchimp List: All your subscribers and the data collected or imported that is associated with each subscriber. You may have multiple lists but it’s best practice to try to keep as few lists as possible and use Segmentation or Groups to target specific interest groups.
Mailchimp Campaign: This is the email that is actually sent out. A campaign is sent to a full list or a Segment or Group within a list.
Mailchimp Group: A Group is a means of allowing subscribers to add their input to an option you give them. As an example, you may ask subscribers to indicate their favorite political party when they subscribe to your list. A campaign may be sent to one or more Groups.
Mailchimp Segment: A Segment is a means of sorting your subscribers by common characteristics. An example is that you may want to send all U.S.A. subscribers a happy Thanksgiving email. As Mailchimp automatically collects geolocation data regarding your subscribers, your subscribers don’t need to explicitly provide their general location.

Mailchimp Limits

There are a few Mailchimp limits that it’s worth knowing about particularly if you are planning on importing a large number of subscribers or use Groups and Segments.

Number of subscribers: There is no maximum number of subscribers per list.
Maximum number of subscribers that can be imported: Officially there is no limit as to the number of subscribers that can be imported into Mailchimp. From experience however be very cautious when exporting from live software services or systems as just because there is no limit on the Mailchimp side doesn’t mean that, for example, your Magento Ecommerce site will be able to handle the export.
Group: Each list can have a maximum of sixty groups.
Form field length: The maximum length of a form field may be 50 bytes (i.e. usually a maximum of 50 characters).
Number of List data fields: A maximum 30 data fields are allowed for each subscriber.
List value fields: Each Mailchimp list field allows 255 bytes of data. English characters typically use 1 byte each however things like symbols may use two bytes. So the maximum characters per Mailchimp field will be 255 characters.

Some of these limits may look restrictive however avoiding the limits usually comes down to managing your subscribers well and thinking about how best to use Groups and Segments..

          Hi Sunil,
The number of users you add is determined by the number of users you need to access your Mailchimp account.

    Hi Gary,

If using multiple lists where some recipients may fall under more than 1 list – are there any preventative measures/rules in Mailchimp that cap the amount of emails a recipient can receive? E.g. a recipient should only receive 2 emails a week.

    Many thanks,

    Calum

    Hi Gary,

With respect to bulk mail sending, I wanted to know what are the limits are like (for customers in a list, for emails that can be sent and how quick ) , since there are normally restrictions applied to prevent spams and maintain reputation.

Also if I were to use another email client that would allow me larger and quicker sends, then is there anyway I could possibly reduce spam occurrences?

    Informative links are also welcome.

    Thank you!

Are there limits to how many subscribers you can import on a daily basis? Also, does mailchimp check for duplicate subscribers during the import process?

I’m not aware of a daily import limit and yes, checks are made for duplicate subscribers on import.

There is no limit as to the maximum number of subscribers. Some of my clients have several million subscribers and Mailchimp has no problem with these numbers.

No. there are no limits as to the number of lists you may have in Mailchimp as far as I’m aware. There are many reasons why you should always aim to have only one list: https://organicweb.com.au/22659/email-marketing/mailchimp-single-list/

    Hi Gary,

I understand that Mailchimp allows us to send 2000 emails in a 24-hour time frame, my questions is does the software send all 2,000 emails in one go? If so, will a majority of those emails go into your spam? Or How does Mailchimp system works? like of 2,000 email, maybe the system will send the first 200, follow by 10 rounds of 200 emails until the end of the day to the email subscriber?

Appreciate your kind help to reply soon. Thanks.

Yes, on the free Mailchimp account you may send a maximum of 2,000 per day.

Mailchimp sends to all contacts that you’ve selected to send to very quickly after you send the campaign (usually within a few seconds or minutes). If you’re sending to 2,000 contacts in a single campaign then the messages will be sent quickly.

You can elect to send in batches however this really isn’t necessary as Mailchimp sends from tens of thousands of IP addresses.

Whether your sent campaigns go to spam depends on your content, subject line and many other factors. With Mailchimp sending 2,000 messages at the same time won’t have any effect on whether the messages go to spam.

i want to sign up for the forever free plan as i have a small business and would be sending emails out probably like 6 times a year, if that often.
if i have 1850 in my original list, then delete half of them (even if they did not unsubscribe on their own), can i import another 1000 names into a new list, so long as the total subscribers that are “currently” in the combination of the two lists under the count of 2000?

      Hi Elaine,
As long as you keep your Subscribed email addresses in your account to less that 2001 you’ll be fine using the free account.

I have uploaded all of my contacts for subscribers, however it is missing 3 contacts from the import. I tried to upload them manually but they still do not show up on my list. What can I do? Why is this happening?

Hi, I have sent 2.000 emails yesterday so I got the message saying you can only send 2.000 per day but now, 28 hours later, I still have that message and can’t send any more emails. What should I do? Thanks!
