Subject: [Your Blog Name] New User Registration
New user registration on your site [Your Blog Name]:
E-mail: [email protected]
The good news is that this is unlikely to be anything to be too concerned about. For various reasons many WordPress blogs allow user subscriptions or membership and what this message is saying is that someone has registered on your site as a Member. The majority of websites however have no need to allow people to manually register as a Member and therefore, for security reasons, it’s a good idea to turn-off / disallow the ability for registration (you’ll still be able to manually add new users should you wish to).
These registrations generally occur via ‘bots that know where to look for the means to register on websites (just because you don’t see a registration form doesn’t mean that one doesn’t exist). The bots probably do have the intent of finding weak security and either hacking the site or placing malware on the site but it’s seldom on a WordPress website that a user registration via a ‘bot can cause this sort of security problem.
To disallow the new Memberships just follow these instructions:
- Login to your WordPress Dashboard.
- Go to Settings -> General.
- Next to Membership remove the check against Anyone can register.
- Click Save changes.
Automated new Member registrations should now cease.
