Introducing the Mailchimp Subscriber popup … that doesn’t work with WordPress
Update: Please read why a popup subscribe form will negatively affect your SEO.
So why doesn’t the Mailchimp subscriber popup work in WordPress?
Why the Mailchimp Subscriber popup doesn’t work on WordPress
I noticed when first adding the popup code by Mailchimp that nothing happened when I loaded any WordPress website page where the popup should have appeared. I searched Google and noticed that many others have the same issue but couldn’t find anyone that actually has the popup working in WordPress. I tested by placing the code as supplied by Mailchimp in both the header and footer but neither worked. My code looked similar to:
<script type="text/javascript" src="//s3.amazonaws.com/downloads.mailchimp.com/js/signup-forms/popup/embed.js" data-dojo-config="usePlainJson: true, isDebug: false"> </script> <script type="text/javascript"> require(["mojo/signup-forms/Loader"], function(L) { L.start({"baseUrl":"mc.us2.list-manage.com","uuid":"7407194612ca922bbc80e591z1","lid":"es713853t99"}) })</script>
Because the Mailchimp supplied popup is so much more elegant than third party solutions and most other WordPress plugins that enable pop-ups, I decided to do a bit of troubleshooting. It didn’t take long to figure out that the Mailchimp file at //s3.amazonaws.com/downloads.mailchimp.com/js/signup-forms/popup/embed.js
tries to load the jquery.js file from the root directory of the domain.
In WordPress, jquery.js is a core script that is supplied with WordPress in the location /wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js
. There is no jquery.js file in the root directory in WordPress powered websites therefore the failure of the popup to load.
Instructions for getting the Mailchimp popup to work in WordPress
First off a disclaimer is needed; the solution that follows is a hack and goes against WordPress best practice. I’m sure there is a far better solution to mine and if anyone knows one, please let me know.
Now here are the instructions (what we are doing below is creating the jquery.js file that the Mailchimp code wants to load however in the file we create we are in fact loading the WordPress supplied version of jquery.js):
- Design your Mailchimp popup and copy the code.
- In WordPress install and activate the Header and Footer Plugin.
- In WordPress go to Settings -> Header and Footer. In the Page Head and Footer tab paste and save the Mailchimp popup code to the Code to be added before the end of the page textarea.
- Open a text editor and paste the following into a new file
jQuery.getScript("/wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js") .done(function() { })
and save the file as jquery.js.
- Using FTP or your cPanel File Manager copy the newly created jquery.js to the root of your domain (this is usually the www directory in cPanel or the httpdocs directory if you use Parallels Plesk Panel).
Your popup subscribe form should now work when you load any page on your website. Keep in mind that the Mailchimp popup is coded so that if a visitor subscribes or clicks the popup close button, the form won’t be shown to them again (i.e. don’t fall into the trap of thinking the popup doesn’t work when it actually does). The form remembers not to show the popup again via the use of a cookie therefore clearing cookies from your browser will force the popup to show again.
Tried this, but didn’t work for me 🙁
Any suggestions?
@Jess, Is your WordPress install perhaps in a subdirectory/subfolder on the server? If so then the path in jquery.js will need to be amended e.g.
/wordpress/wp-includes/js/jquery.js
if WordPress is installed in the directory called ‘wordpress’.This completely screwed our website…
I have used this on two sites and I love you. Way to problem solve.
This did not work for me. Then I renamed the file to embed.js and it worked.
Well this worked for us. Thank you for posting.
Hi Gary,
Thanks for this – I have implemented your fix and it works for me if I put a simple .html page on the webserver: http://www.inallthingsbeautiful.com/indexTest.html
Unfortunately when I put it within the regular website I am still getting an error and the popup doesn’t load. The error that the javascript console gives is “Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)” and the resource it is looking for is http://www.inallthingsbeautiful.com/wp-includes/js/jquery.js?_=1427243636188
As I say, the pop-up works perfectly on the plain html page.
Any thoughts on how I can go about debugging this or how to fix?
Thanks
Hi Greg,
It looks like you’re using some sort of caching in WordPress which is resulting in the 404 error. Please try to disable caching and see if that helps.
If that then works then it’s possible to use caching without adding a cache string to the jquery.js URL.
Hi Gary,
I am using opencart, i am searching long time now to find a solution to this, though your solution is the most promising.
Is there a way to make this work in opencart?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Vangelis,
Unfortunately I have no experience with Opencart so can’t assist 🙁
Np, thanks for the reply!
Hello
You totally lost me at step 5.
No idea what the FTP is or the cpanel… ” is. Can you simplify please? Thank you! I do everything in wordpress in the admin bit.
“Using FTP or your cPanel File Manager copy the newly created jquery.js to the root of your domain (this is usually the www directory in cPanel or the httpdocs directory if you use Parallels Plesk Panel).
Hi Kate,
You won’t be able to perform these instructions all within the WordPress Dashboard (admin). These instructions require that you have access to your host directories and files which is where FTP/cPanel come in.
Your host should be able to provide instructions on how to access their cPanel.
Gary,
thanks for this. It worked for me. For those trying to figure out the cpanel. Go to your host, go to the file manager, webroot, and choose the file where your “wp” or wordpress content is- usually in a file that’s called your websites name. Then choose the wp-includes folder and upload the jquery.js file there :).
Hope this helps!
Rachel – thank you for this! I was able to fix the Mailchimp popup with your extra help!
Gary – thank you for the solve!
This finally worked for me – yay! But… How can I make it only popup on my single blog pages (or general blog page)?
Thank you
When I tried this fix there was another JavaScript error that appeared. It looked like some sort of script conflict, so I deactivated each of the site’s plugins one at a time. Turns out, the Contact Form 7 plugin was causing a problem with the Mailchimp popup script. Works as it should now (without having to add the jquery.js script to the root directory).
Thanks for this tip. Mine turns out to be a plugin called EVENT CALENDAR WD. The pop-up works after that without any tweak. I inserted the code into the header script.
Thanks, Gary! This is exactly what I was looking for. It took a moment to figure out exactly where to upload the jquery.js (or embed.js), but once I did, I was up and running.
If you find it doesn’t work, try using the directory /wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js
Thanks for posting this — while I also found the script was loading jquery.js from the root (and failing), I didn’t know what to do with it!
Gary,
This didn’t work for me. I tried saving the file to the path: /wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js but there is alredy a “jquery.js” file there. I’m assuming it came with my theme?
Thoughts?
Hi BD,
Per item 5 of the instructions, the jquery.js file that needs to be created must be saved to the ROOT of your domain. All the jquery.js file that is created per the instructions does is redirect the query to the default version of the WordPress jquery.js file.
Hope this helps.
Gary, thanks for the reply! How do I know what the root of my domain is? Apologies for the elementary questions. I tried almost every file path. Could it be something with my theme?
@BD, see this article.
Thanks so much Gary! It’s fantastic! You’ve saved me so much time and from having a crappy looking pop up on my site!
My only real beef is that the fonts differ on mobile (iPhone) to that on the desktop which is a bit strange. It’d be awesome if you could have it for just posts rather than all pages but I tried a few things with the header and footer plugin and looks like it’s all or nothing. If you’ve had any success with this I’d love to hear about it!
Thanks again!
Hi Sarah, I’m not sure why the font issue may be occurring. Which Header/Footer plugin are you using? The Header and Footer plugin has the functionality to insert script on posts only.
Dear Gary,
first of all, thank you so much for your amazing tutorial. I’m having a problem with this plugin: it doesn’t work with Yoast. Is there any other option in order to paste the Mailchimp popup code?
Thank you in advance,
Ángelo
@Angelo, unfortunately I’m not aware of any other way to use the Mailchimp popup code 🙁
Having the same problem. Could you not just put the Mailchimp popup code in the footer.php file above the closing footer tag?
Yes, adding the code to footer.php should work. The problem however is that when you update your Theme then footer.php will likely be overwritten.
Worked like a charm! Thanks for the great instructions.
Hi Gary, it works but I have a flexslider and if the mailchimp popup works, doesn’t works the slider…and viceversa..any suggestion?
It gives me this error:
[Error] TypeError: undefined is not a function (evaluating ‘jQuery(‘.flexslider.slider’).flexslider’)
Thank you very much
Mmmm unfortunately not sure of a solution offhand.
Ok, thank you for the answer. I’ll post the solution when (and if) i’ll find it 🙂
s
Job done! Thanks so much, that worked perfectly.
Hey would love to know if you have any ideas on how to make this MC link to load faster?
The http://s3.amazonaws.com/downloads.mailchimp.com/js/signup-forms/popup/embed.js link is so bulky is there anyway around using this?
Thanks for the great post
@ Joel, unfortunately I really don’t know how to improve the load speed of the script 🙁
Thank you Gary
The script showing on my site but I face an other problem . My site become wider !! Whe I add the script of Mailchimp Popover script all the site Template become wide , the post , pages and main page
Can you help me to fix this problem ?
Thank you
@Nasser, what Theme are you using?
Dude! You have just solved a very annoying and time consuming problem it a few simple steps. Thank you and well done!
Worked perfectly!
Hey Gary,
I’ve been trying this method all morning + can’t get it to work.
This fatal error popped up on my plug-in page:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<' in /home/truenow4/public_html/wp-content/plugins/header-footer/plugin.php on line 393
Any assistance you can offer would be much appreciated!!
Thanks!
Alex
ALex, perhaps try to reinstall the Header Footer plugin or try a different plugin that will allow you to enter scripts to run (your theme may even allow this).
I have tried all of above. It does not work. I have Inovado wordpress theme.
Hi Fredrik,
The solution described int he post unfortunately doesn’t work with all themes. I recommend asking the theme developer on themeforest if they know the reason.
Like you said to Alex “try a different plugin that will allow you to enter scripts to run”. Can you suggest a plugin?
Under where I´ve put the Mailchimp script in header footer widget it says “It works if your theme has the wp_footer call. It should be just before the closing tag”. How do I check if my theme has that.
Hi Fredrik,
Most good quality themes include wp_footer as this is a requirement of the WordPress theme check team (https://make.wordpress.org/themes/handbook/review/recommended/templates/). If usure contact your theme developer as they’ll be able to advise.
I ahven’t tried it but another plugin to insert code is https://wordpress.org/plugins/addfunc-head-footer-code/.
I don’t know why the popup occurs only after I click “Save” for the Header and Footer plugin each time. The popup will not occur if I refresh the page.
He does say in a previous answer that it only shows up once, so you have to delete your cookies in order to see it again.
I installed the file in almost every directory suggested above and did not notice it working until I logged out of the wordpress dashboard at the top i.e.: the admin panel across the top.
After doing that and viewing it as the rest of the world does – IT WORKED!
Thanks!
Ok, I’m a newbie and probably in over my head.
I installed the header and footer, and copied the code, but what do you mean by “open a text editor” in step 4? I noted your answer to Kate on Step 5, and will use that info when I get there.
Thanks for your help!
A text editor is a software application such as Notepad++ or Microsoft Notepad.
HI! I got to this point as well but dont know what to do with that text/code?
Thank you!
Thank you! Worked like a charm, but …
… I’ve lost my responsive header menu (appears on scroll) in Enfold. Likely a jQuery conflict?
Any thoughts on how to resolve this?
@Andy, unfortunately I’m not sure offhand 🙁
Hi Andy,
Turn off all the plugins and see and see that fixes your problem.
Then turn them back on, one by one.
I want to display mailchimp popup but on href link can you tell me how can i show popup on click?
I recommend using a third-party popup service or plugin as it would be alot of coding to change the default behaviour of the Mailchimp provided popup.
Any recommended plugin ?
http://www.popu.ps/ seem good
Hey Andy,
Can i make the popup to only open on a page that i decide? I dont want the popup to open for the homepage and other pages that are on my top navigation bar.
Thanks
I found the Mailchimp popup code works just fine as-is when added to the head section of the header.php of my client’s themes.
It just worked for me using the header and footer plugin, but no changes to the root directory or anything. Mailchimp/wordpress included a fix since this was posted maybe?
update: only shows when I’m logged in as admin. Otherwise does not show. I’ll update once I figure it out!
Great, thanks. It worked for me.
Hi Gary,
Firstly thank you, you clearly have helped a lot of people…
I am part way there: The popup now works, however i have an issue on iPhone and iPad where the popup does not reveal all the fields nor the subscribe button when it naturally loads. Additionally there is an issue with the pop up not disappearing after a user hits subscribe. I’d love your thoughts on this.
It is latest WP with Virtue Theme (fully responsive)…
Many thanks and once again, good job!
@T Rex, to be honest, I’ve started to use other pop-ups with WordPress such as Elegant Themes Bloom and OptinMonster which seem to work better than the popup provided by Mailchimp 🙁
Thanks Gary. Have you had any success with any free plugins or services? We are a very small outfit at http://rylstoneaerodrome.com.au
Cheers again.
Yip, http://www.popu.ps/ works well.
Hi Gary thanks for the great article.
The popup pops up behind my cover image. Using Twenty Eleven theme. Any ideas? Thanks
No sure offhand. Perhaps something to do with the CSS Z-index property.
Works nice.
Do you have any suggestions for what to do about people who keep seeing the popup because they always delete their cookies? (Or am I a rare exception in telling Firefox to delete my cookies whenever it closes?)
Unfortunately all the popup boxes I know of use cookie.
Thanks so much for these instructions – they worked like a charm for me.
This seems to be the closest that I could get for a solution to this problem, thank you!
I seem to be coming up short, though. Firstly, when I activate and add code into the Headers and Footers plugin, it alternatively affects some Visual Composer widgets/shortcodes that involve js, so I had to deactivate and delete the H&F plugin to have everything else working again. Is there an alternative route than using that specific plugin?
Secondly, when I completed all of the steps, the pop-up still wasn’t appearing. I noticed where you say “In WordPress, jquery.js is a core script that is supplied with WordPress in the location /wp-includes/js/jquery.js. There is no jquery.js file in the root directory in WordPress powered websites therefore the failure of the popup to load,” but looking into the path /wp-includes/js/ there is no jquery.js in that directory. Is that something I need to add along with adding the jquery.js into the root folder?
Thank you for your assistance! 🙂
Thanks for the heads-up Sandie. The jquery.js file in WordPress has moved to
/wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js
The instructions above have been updated.
Is there also a way to use this without the header and footer plugin? i don`t like to much plugins on my WordPresss, so i hope i can paste the code somewhere else.
Thx,
@iph, your theme may allow for inserting code in the header or footer.
Thank you for the instructions! Interestingly, I first did steps 1-3, and the pop up worked and the test signups translated over to mail chimp perfectly. The confirmation email went through immediately too.
Then I had someone help me with steps 4-5 and everything still works, but now the confirmation is much slower to be delivered to the inbox.
Both ways worked though.
I am less technical, but can you tell me the significant of steps 4+5 to the process?
Thanks,
Jessica
Hi Jessica,
Steps 4 and 5 are there so that the Mailchimp script is able to find jquery. Interesting it worked without steps 4 and 5.
I must be missing something. I followed instructions and this is what my file looks like in my host site” public_html/wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js” but nothing happens on any page of my site. Not sure what to do next…..
Hi Gary
I was about to pull my hair out with the embedded Mailchimp pop-up form until I googled and found your post. I followed your advised and it worked! However, the pop-up will not close on the site when you click to close. Any thoughts why? Or tips to fix
Andria, I haven’t come across this issue before. Perhaps there is a conflict with a plugin.
I’m having the same thing. The pop-up appears but the ‘close’ does not work.
Odd, since I tried it in my development site first, where it works fine. The difference is, the development site is installed in a sub-directory.
So, the ‘close’ function works here:
http://www.11112018.org.uk/conscience/
but does not work here:
http://www.conscienceonline.org.uk/
Same here. Popup works but cannot close it.
So my embed code works without this work around but my question is a bit different. On a computer, all is well but on mobile the ‘close’ button is hidden, so a subscriber is stuck on the screen and cannot close it if they want. Is there anything I can add to the code to get this to stop happening? I feel like we’ll end up loosing traffic if folks can’t exit out of that. Don’t know where else to look! Doesn’t look like many people are having that problem.
Hi Julie,
I’m thinking one of two things is happening. When you are designing the pop-up within mail chimp, you have a choice of percentage for the overlay opacity. Make sure it is at at least 65% or more. That will black out the background of the screen so the “x” option is viewable. Also, go into the settings tab and play around with the pop up size. My site uses an “800” Max pop up width, but maybe you need yours to be smaller. Just a thought! Good luck!
Hello Julie,
I experienced such a problem too. However, i have solved it by not placing the code in the Page Header and Footer, but instead in my post since that was my purpose in the first place.
I believe if you only place the code in just one of the below:
1) the header/footer as mentioned in the article
2) the page which you want the pop up to appear
might solve your problem. Let me know if it works!
Hey. None of that worked but I found a work around: I downloaded a popup plugin and just embedded the form. Worked well
Hi Gary,
I would just like to express my gratitude for this solution. It works and helped solved a problem which I have not been able to know the problem since a week ago.
it worked for me, thanks
Hey Gary,
Thanks for the instructions! They worked perfectly!
I was testing a popup and after it ran I disabled the Header and Footer plugin. I’ve gone back to Mailchimp to update the popup text. I published it and went back to wordpress to re-enable the Header and Footer plugin. Deleted the cache.
Now, I can’t get the popup to work again.
Is the order you do things important? Like should I have reactivated Header and Footer BEFORE I updated the Mailchimp popup? Should I never have deactivated that plugin?
Sorry I’m not the developer in the family! Any help would be appreciated.
Jeff
Well i just paste the code in footer.php and it worked perfectly 🙂
Yay!!! I am NOT a web developer but a curious nerd and I did it!!! Thank you so much for writing this and for making your directions clear and to the point.
I LOVE people like you who are smarter than me. It makes my life so much easier. And, Thank GOD for the internet.
Sending you a big smile and a high 5,
Monica
Yes!!!! Thank you so much! I was up all last night finishing my e-book and pop up form and getting excited to post it when I ran into this problem. So glad I found this article. Thanks again Gary!!
Hi, I was able to use these instructions and get my pop up to work, but when someone visits my site and the pop up appears, it won’t GO AWAY! The “Close” on the top right of the pop up doesn’t do anything (you can’t even click it). How do I get the pop-up to allow someone to close it? It also won’t go away after someone subscribes. Please help!
Thanks!
Jenn, there is perhaps a conflict with another plugin.
Hello,
I have a free wordpress.com website. Should I be able to add a pop up to my site? I don’t have an option for header/footer or plug ins.
No. You won’t be able to use this pop-up subscribe form method 🙁
Are there any alternatives when using wordpress.com? Other than the ‘Follow blog’ widget?
Saved my life!
Simplest mistakes seem to be my culprit. I followed everything, and nothing was working. Realized that I hadn’t click ‘save’. So obviously nothing was working. Now everything works!
Genius, thank you.
In my case it still can not show up.
When I follow all your steps, the other popups can not working.
Do you know another way to show up pop form?
Best Regards
I’ve used Bloom by Elegant Themes on a few WordPress sites and it seems good.
Awesome – thank you!
Hi !
My popup doesn’t works… but before doing this I would like to know if anyone has tried this little hack with Bridge Theme from Qode Interactive ?
Also if it’s still working after WordPress updates ?
By the way, thank you so much for it !
I followed this step by step and it’s still not working 🙁
Thank you so much for these instructions!! I would’ve NEVER figured this out on my own. It’s working great! Question about the users closing out the pop-up, will it show up again when they come back to the sight?
Hey there, this is not working on our site.
When you reload the page to test if it works, our site never gets past the preloader. It just stays on the preloader screen and never enters the site.
When opening up our FTP files, it seems that there is already a jquery.js file at this location /wp-includes/js/jquery/
Maybe I am trying to place it in the wrong location?
Is there another place I should place this? Is trying a different name ok? Would really appreciate your help. thanks so much. God bless!
Hi Gary
Thanks, great job!,
actually, it worked already after step 3!, on two different sites/hosts!
i have the same issue
Thank you. It works!
Thanks for this. I just wanted to add that the Sumome.com WordPress plugin works really well for this, for those that don’t want to worry about messing with code. Really easy to set up and integrates with Mailchimp.
Hi, Thx for instructions.
Anyway popup works for 2 minutes, after doesn’t work again. I dont know what to do.
Hi Gary,
I got the Mailchimp popup to work. However, it messes with the layout of my theme. It makes white space on both the right and left sides of my theme, when I specifically designed the page images to stretch all the way across the screen. I am using the Tesseract Theme by Tyler Moore.
Any advice on the subject would be helpful, thanks!
Haven’t seen this before. Please let me know your URL and I’ll have a quick look.
It works! Perfect. Thank you
OMG. Thank you so much.
Thanks to your solution we got it working but now I’m not sure how to change it so that it can pop up more than once.
My customers will return many times to my site before they buy and may not join the first time but I want them to see it at least one more time.
Do you know of any way to do this?
Offhand I’m not sure Nicole however it should be simple enough to do this with a bit of JavaScript.
Fantastic, it worked for me – thanks so much!
Hi Gary,
Thanks for posting such a valuable post to add mailchimp popup in wordpress site, Is that any way styled this popus?
Like my popup heading showing “Subscribe to our newsletter to get exclusive news about the project !”
is that any way to change this text??
Also is that any way to change the Button color?? Popup Size I mean width & height ??
Very helpful if we can fix these things.
Thanks in Advance
Rajesh
Rajesh, if you know some CSS (and possibly jQuery) you should be able to style the popup as required. There are various WordPress plugins however that allow for styling via a GUI (Bloom is the best I’ve come across)
Hello, Gary. First of all, I have the Afterlight theme. It’s not very header and footer heavy (or designed well for those things) so I only use my header for the title of my blog (www.gothcollar.com).
I have read through the comments and done variations of everything listed (adding jquery.js everywhere, changing it to embed.js just in case, downloading addfunc to be sure, etc). I even logged out as someone else suggested and checked the site through my phone, still does not work.
I’ve reverted back to the original Header Footer plugin (which still doesn’t work for me) and am kind of at a loss. Do you have any suggestions?
Hi Gary,
I’ve tried everything and it doesn’t seem to be working for me.
Please could you take a look if I email you my details?
Santiago
http://www.pilgrimproductions.co.uk
This worked for me with a couple tweeks – I had to put the js file in the the wp-admin folder and the Mail Chimp scrip in the “AFTER THE TAG” box. Thanks for this post – really saved me a ton of time trouble shooting.
Thanks so much for this! It worked for me. Although, I simply added the code to my footer.php file in the child theme I created. So far so good!
Hi Gary,
This is the exact issue I am trying to resolve. Thanks for putting this together. However, I simply want the popup to work when a button or specific thumbnail image is clicked. Does that make it more simple or harder? I can play around with CSS and html, but am not a developer. My simpleton idea is to just embed the MC code in the text widget where I want it to be, but it seems like that just won’t work(?)
Andy, you’ll probably need a bit of jQuery to do that.
Thanks for getting back to me Gary. I kept looking at plugin options and eventually got something to work for me. Your post is on point though. The Mailchimp popup is so simple and well-executed, it’s a huge bummer it’s not geared for WordPress out of the box. Thanks for sharing your technique.
Hi Andy!
I’m trying the same as you, and am wondering what your solution was? Thanks in advance!
Marleen
Hi Marleen,
In the end I bailed on the pop-up and am using the mailmunch plugin (upon click the visitor just goes to a clean landing page with mailmunch plugin handling the form).
Andy
Hi Gary – Thanks for the post, it seems very promising to me. I’m relatively new to WordPress and Mailchimp. I’m envious that others have gotten this to work, and I’m still unable to. I’m using KLEO Child theme and am trying to use the suggestions above. Unfortunately, I’m still not able to get the subscribe form to appear in a popup.
In my developer view, I continue to see the following error –
Error: multipleDefine(…)
src: dojoLoader
Has anyone experienced this type of error when trying to resolve this?
I welcome any suggestion to over come this problem.
Thanks in advance!
Works great!! Thank you so much!!
actually I spoke too soon. It does pop up, but as another mentioned, it won’t go away when you click the close. I’ve tried deactivating most of my other plug ins and nothing changes. Guess I’ll not use this for now and hope for a solution.
Thank you so much ! It worked ! I just had to sign out and sign in to wordpress admin and voila! 🙂
Thank you for providing this info!
Do you have any suggestions for how to set this up so the popup only appears on a single specific page, rather than site-wide? I would like to use it to capture leads on an event I’m promoting in Mexico, but don’t want other visitors (especially English-speaking ones) to see it.
Max, you’ll be able to do that by including the
in the header or footer for only the page/post where you want the popup to appear.require(["mojo/signup-forms/Loader"], function(L)
{ L.start({"baseUrl":"mc.us2.list-manage.com","uuid":"7407194612ca922bbc80e591z1","lid":"es713853t99"})
})
The https://en-au.wordpress.org/plugins/header-footer/ plugin will let you add code on a per page/post basis.
HI there. I am struggling to get this to work. I created the .js file and uploaded it to my websites root folder and copied and pasted in the header and footer plugin in the ( SECTION INJECTION). I am using the Colormag theme. When I add the code, the slider on the home page stops working and no pop up appears..
Just cannot get it right..:(
Any ideas please?
creat!!!
Thanks
I just wanted to mention that I was helping a client get the mailchimp provided script to work on their wordpress installation. They use Genesis and there is a child theme in place.
What worked for us was adding the script into a text widget and then copied the genesis footer.php file into the child theme. I didn’t change anything in the footer file and it worked. Hopefully this helps others.
Worked for me! Thanks so very much, Gary.
Hi Gary, first of all thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I came across another solution just before visiting your website and thought it would be nice to share it: https://gist.github.com/nickcernis/3df74c0c6c18b75cb951
It works like a charm.
I added the script to my functions.php file like so:
add_action( ‘wp_footer’, ‘myscript’ );
function myscript() {
//script here….
}
Hope it helps .
Worked perfectly for us, thanks.
Hi Gary,
Thanks for the great article. I landed here looking for a solution to a different problem: my mailchimp form exit button is not clickable on mobile, forcing anyone to either leave or fill in their email address. After filling in the email address, the notification that an email has been sent is also not removeable, resulting in an unusable website on mobile. I hope you have a solution for me, or know where I can find it.
Thank you very much,
Eva
http://www.freshwatervalley.nl
thank you! worked for me. My WP install is in a separate directory. I put the jquery file in the root directory.
Gary you are a star! Also thanks for all the info in the comments section.
Had to add the html code to the Themes footer settings.
jquery.js in www root + wp-includes folders
Much appreciated!
I spent alot of time learning how to create a list and a campaign. Then when I am finally able to put it on my site i find that it does not work? smh.
So I went and created a new account with Mail Chimp to see if maybe I missed the disclaimer saying
“does not work well with WordPress, the #1 Content Management System in the world”
But noooo I did not see a disclaimer.
Shame on you Mail Chimp.
I find this very much below my expectations. I will be contacting Mail Chimp to give them my opinion. If the only way to make a Mail Chimp Popup work is to edit the code (which I will not touch) then they should add a disclaimer when signing up.
Kathleen, there is now a far simpler method to add the popup to WordPress websites. see https://organicweb.com.au/22571/wordpress/jetpack-mailchimp-wordpress/
Hello, I found a simpler solution.
First thing, I noticed the link given away by mailchimp doesn’t contain “http:” after the src tag.
I added this.
Second thing, jquery is missing, because mailchimp tries to grab it from the main folder.
I just FTPd jquery.js to the mail folder / and it worked.
My solution provides a workaround without any other installation.
Hope it’s useful!

Dimoteca.
Hi Gary,
Thank you for your tutorial. It works fine.
We would like to add this popup only for one page.
It could be possible?
What do you recommend to us?
Thank you again.
it works for me. Thanks bro!
Thanks for the help, this worked for getting the popup to appear on my homepage, but not on any other pages. (I’m testing it in incognito windows and going directly to different posts, so it’s not an issue of the popup only displaying once per user)
How do I get the popup to display on whichever page or post the user visits first, rather than only the homepage?
Hello, I tried this but did not work and my Instagram plugin and sub-menus are not showing. Any idea how I can make this work? When I remove the code from the Header and Footer plugin, my Instagram and sub-menus work again.
worked for me! Thank you.
Hi Gary,
O lost you at step 4. Where is the text editor in wordpress to paste this code into? I checked that there is only a pugin editor and a text editor associated with posts. Please kindly advise. Thank you in advance for your help.
In step 4 I refer to a text editor such as Microsoft Notepad or Apple TextEdit (i.e. not a WordPress editor).
Thank you Gary. It works now. i am so happy. God bless you!
Hey there! Since this was originally posted in 2015, is it still a problem? I have the html code from the mailchimp pop up form I created, pasted in the header/footer plug-in I use (so I don’t have to mess with true-blue coding)
In my list details on mailchimp, it states some of my subscribers were joined via pop-up form, so it has to have worked, right? It’s hard to tell, since it won’t pop up for anyone close to me, since they’ve all already subscribed, or dismissed the pop-up and it won’t show again for them…
Really wish there was a way to test these pop ups.
Thoughts?
Hi Shelley,
Unfortunately this is still an issue for many people 🙁 It is difficult to test the popup with it showing once only per person.
I have the exact same thing happening. I wonder if it works on mobile but not on the desktop? I tried to check it from another computer and it worked once. Arg.
Hi Gary, I wanted to thank you for this very easy to understand tutorial ! I’m a complete noob and had been searching for a way to implement the mailchimp pop ups. Works like a charm !
Thank you Gary, at first it wasn’t working but then, after i went through all my plugins by Deactivating then Activating one by one i did find that one of the plugins was the problem. After all that it worked like a charm! Thanks again champ!
thanks .. it worked perfectly in my site > http://www.anicow.com
Try embedding the Mailchimp code link in the head tag in your home page (code), save it … then clear your browser’s cookies, and refresh the page. Your popup form should now work on your WordPress site.
It is working for me. Thanks a lot. digitalyoga.in
Hi. I don’t understand your explanation. What could cause the problem of mailmunch pop up not working? I have tried many times to insert the pop up & it’s still now working. Could you recommend a better pop up plugin ? No mailchimp pls.
Hi Marlena, this post is about the Mailchimp provided popup and not the Mailmunch popup. There are various other popups that work with WordPress however I’m only familiar with the Mailchimp popup.
It is working for me. Thanks a lot 🙂
