O.k., the title of this Post is absolute garbage. Over the past few days there has been a brute force attack targeting WordPress and Joomla. The attack on WordPress targets WordPress and Joomla Sites that use the usernames admin, Admin, administrator, test, and root. A dictionary of commonly used passwords is then used to try to break into the Website.
The thing is that you really have nothing to worry about if you take the basic security precautions. Three years ago WordPress stopped using admin as the default username. We all should also be using unique and strong passwords as this is just basic security best practice.
Another thing to know is that there are attempted hacking of all types of Websites (HTML, Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, Magento etc.) continuously and the only reason that the recent attempt has gotten so much news is because of the scale; the recent hacking attempt isn’t advanced at all and only people with very weak security may be affected.
Here is what you can do to greatly diminish the chance of being hacked by the recent attack:
Click go (the green search button) in the Duck Duck Go search box below and change your password within WordPress (and make absolutely sure you aren’t using a username such as Admin or root).
Then, if you want even more security, start using CloudFlare and contact me if you need assistance with setting up CloudFlare or getting more WordPress security.
