I often get asked to recommend a Webhost that delivers good hosting for WordPress Websites or Blogs. Many people are suprised when I recommend inexpensive hosting. So which Host is best for WordPress Sites!
The problem with Host recommendations
First, a word of warning; many of the so called Host recommendations or comparisons on the Web are fabrications. Many Hosts run affiliate schemes where the referrer earns a fee for every new customer the Host gets from the referrer. The Host recommendations are often therefore merely a means for the linking Website to earn a commission when you sign-up for hosting.
This post doesn’t contain any affiliate or fee earning links so I earn no fee from recommendations.
WordPress Hosting requirements
The first and most important consideration is whether the Webhost meets the minimum requirements. WordPress provides these requirements on their Website. Don’t even consider using a Host that doesn’t meet these requirements (requirements below correct at time of publishing this Post):
- PHP 5.2.4 or greater
- MySQL 5.0 or greater
- The mod_rewrite Apache module
Shared or Dedicated Hosting
Shared Hosting is usually less costly than dedicated Hosting but a server is shared among numerous Shared Hosting accounts/Websites. The IP address too is usually shared and this has raised a fair amount of debate as to whether a shared IP address is bad for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I haven’t ever seen any valid evidence that this is the case.
For small (and even medium) size WordPress Sites there isn’t usually a need to use dedicated hosting
There are various Hosting related software with all sorts of weird names including Microsoft IIS, Plesk, Zeus etc. For WordPress, because almost all Themes and Plugins are tested on this configuration, look for the following in a Host; Linux, Apache HTTP Server and cPanel.
Good WordPress Shared Hosting
In my experience, the following Webhosts are all great for running WordPress Websites; Hostgator, Bluehost, iPage and Hostpapa.
