I, like millions of others, read the Priceonomics blog. Their articles are interesting and easy to read. A few days ago they blogged about their traffic sources in 2014. The largest source of traffic was ‘direct’ traffic with traffic originating at Facebook coming a close second. Digg, Google Search, Reddit, Twitter and so on followed with far lower numbers.
The article delves into the Facebook stats and I was fascinated, although not surprised, to read that traffic from links to articles on the Priceonomics blog that had been shared on Facebook were very high, but traffic from the Priceonomics Facebook Page was a ‘waste of time’.
On thing we gradually noticed, however, was that maintaining a Facebook page was pretty much a waste of time by the end of 2014. While Facebook sends lots of traffic to us if one of our articles goes viral, posting said article to the Priceonomics Facebook Page does pretty much nothing any more. Posting on Twitter or emailing things to our readers is much more effective for us than posting on Facebook. We can only imagine how swindled companies that spent millions promoting their Facebook pages must feel. What a monumental waste of money. Priceonomics, January 2015
What this highlights is that effort should be put into getting content shared by viewers on Facebook but spending time and effort on a Facebook Page may well not yield returns. Also noted in the quote above is that emailing articles to interested readers is far more effective.
