How to use Stripe with Shopify

As I assist my eCommerce clients to integrate Shopify and Mailchimp as well as train people how to integrate the two services, I need a Shopify store on which to test and demonstrate. I have used various demo Shopify stores in the past to demonstrate to clients how they can increase sales by integrating with Mailchimp. I’ve decided however to setup a live store to make my Shopify to Mailchimp eCommerce training more meaningful.

Where is the Stripe Payment Gateway option in Shopify?

I love Shopify and really think that they have a great service. I was therefore a little surprised when setting up my new store; I use Stripe as my payment gateway for the Mailchimp services I provide so decided to setup Stripe as my payment gateway (in the past I’ve always used the bogus gateway for my demo stores). I however couldn’t see Stripe listed in the Select a Credit Card Gateway selector; Shopify Payments, Paypal, eWAY, Authorize.net and many others were listed but not Stripe.

After a bit of searching I eventually found out that Shopify Payments use Stripe as their service provider. I couldn’t find that an existing Stripe account can be used for a Shopify store therefore the need to create a new account.

Stripe instructions for Shopify

Here are the instructions to use Stripe as your payment gateway for your Shopify store:

  1. Login to your Shopify store.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Payments.
  4. In the Accept Credit Cards section select Shopify Payments.
  5. Click Activate.
  6. Click Complete account setup.
  7. Enter the various details and submit.

Upon taking the steps above you’ll be able to accept credit card payments and, although Shopify Payments use Stripe, you won’t be able to view your Shopify Payments in the Stripe Dashboard.

Can you set up Stripe subscription payments through your Shopify? And if so is it charged as an external payment gateway?
