As my regular readers know I work, in the main, as a WordPress Website specialist here in beautiful Australia. In addition to WordPress Website development, training and support I also lecture on Website Development and Business and Management.
Between working I experiment with various Web based software, for example Learning Management Systems such as Moodle, and most recently MediaWiki (software that powers Wikipedia).
A number of people have asked what appears to be common questions in relation to starting up a Wiki so I thought I’d share my answers. Note that my responses are related to MediaWiki software specifically.
How easy is it to install and use a Wiki?
It’s actually surprisingly simple to install MediaWiki. The setup process is similar to that for WordPress and it’s also a PHP/MySQL based app. A few hosts will even install the software for you.
Which Webhost is best for Wiki software?
Is Wiki software easy to use?
No. You will need at least moderate Web development skills. Many settings need to be performed on the Webserver itself so you need to know how to edit PHP files and use FTP. MediaWiki is not as simple as WordPress or Joomla.
I know HTML. I’ll then be fine with adding Wiki content?
No. Wiki markup is different to HTML. HTML does help but, if you want to learn markup, start contributing to Wikipedia and you’ll learn soon enough.
Can I copy and paste from Word into MediaWiki?
Nope, no can do. There are various Microsoft Word to MediaWiki converters available but, in my experience, none do a good job.
How long to setup a Wiki with content?
The basic premise of a Wiki is that content improvement is continuous. A Wiki is not a set and forget project.
Why setup a Wiki?
Wikis are brilliant where there is a lot of interrelated information. I’m at present building a Wiki with information regarding the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. Altogether there are tens of thousands of units of study, courses and training packages that interrelate; this is perfect content therefore to load into a Wiki.
My organisation needs help in setting up a Wiki?
Thanks for asking. I may be contacted for your Wiki setup requirements.
