Many shopping centres, airports, hospitals, restaurants and events (concerts, sports, trade and so on) provide free Wi-Fi internet access. For people to be able to login to use the free internet, those connecting generally need to provide their email addresses.
I help large and small organizations (including some of Australia’s largest stadiums) use this data for their EDM campaigns. Here are the answers to four questions that I’m often asked by large organizations that provide free internet access in return for the persons email address.
It it worth marketing to hotspot login email addresses?
Every email address you have can lead to more business. You’d be crazy not to promote your organization considering how effective email marketing can be.

Can I use login email addresses in Mailchimp?
Yes, as long as you’re complying with the various spam laws in your country, your subscribers have agreed to receive your email marketing and you comply with the Mailchimp terms of use then you should be fine to send Email marketing to your subscribers. Be very clear on your splash page (where people login) as to how you’ll be using people’s email addresses so that they may make an informed decision as to whether to supply their email addresses or not.
Will Mailchimp accept theses publicly attained email addresses?
Mailchimp will certainly accept a proportion of the email addresses you attain. There is no simple answer as to how many of the subscribers will be accepted into your Mailchimp list however; the number of valid email addresses, role-based addresses, throw-away email domain addresses and so on will all influence the proportion of email addresses that Mailchimp will accept.
Can Mailchimp handle all my email addresses?
There is no technical limit on the number of email addresses you may add to your Mailchimp list. There are some very large and well used free WiFi hotspots in Australia such as the Sydney Cricket Ground who use a solution delivered by Cisco and Telstra (disclaimer – the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust is one of my clients), the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre using Xirrus and Westfield shopping centres with an Optus solution.
The largest number of subscribers that any of my clients have in a Mailchimp list is 2 million email addresses and this poses no problem at all.
