Mailchimp Test Email Sending Limits

Before sending email marketing to your subscribers it is important to test your campaign. The two most commonly used ways to test campaigns in Mailchimp is to enter preview mode and send a test email.

Preview mode allows us to get a rough idea of how our campaign will look on desktop and mobile devices. We can also choose to pay for Inbox Previews which allows testing against specific email clients and devices such as Apple Mail 9, Outlook 2013 and Gmail.

Sending a test email allows us to send ourselves and others the campaign for testing prior to sending to our list, segment or group. Once we receive the test email we should test that the links in the email are valid and that the content is displaying as needed.

Of note is that there are limits to the number of test emails that we can send through Mailchimp. The limits are:

  • For free accounts: Maximum 12 emails per campaign but to no more than to six email addresses per test. Also a maximum of 24 test emails per account in any 24 hours.
  • For subscriptions and Pay As You Go: Maximum 70 emails per campaign but to no more than to 20 email addresses per test. Also a maximum of 200 test emails per account in any 24 hours.

For most people, the test sending limits are more than adequate however if you reach your sending limits, you now know why 🙂

Why not get the most from your email marketing. We’ll help with your Mailchimp training.

Thank you for this article. However, if you do exceed your 12 tests with a fee account, what happens? Does Mailchimp send you a warning saying “we can’t send your email newsletter because you have exceeded your test limit”? Or does nothing happen and you just won’t get your email newsletter sent?
