Images are an important part of marketing. Even your brand is usually identified by an image. Mailchimp has certain requirements for images that you include in your email campaigns.
You do not need to have your images at exact dimensions before uploading to Mailchimp as Mailchimp templates are responsive and will display your image at the required dimensions (If you have a custom coded template then, depending on how your template is coded, you may need to resize images before uploading to your email campaign).
Here are answers to frequent Mailchimp email campaign image questions.
What is the minimum Mailchimp image width?
Mailchimp provide recommendations for the minimum image width that range from 132px to 564px wide. The width per the Mailchimp recommendations vary depending on which content block is used and the number of columns.
In my experience after working with hundreds of Mailchimp clients, simply make sure that your images are always a minimum of 600px wide. Using the 600px minimum width guideline works well and ensures that your images won’t appear distorted (except if you add an image to a text content block. Tip: don’t add images to a text content block but rather add images to image content blocks).
What are the maximum Mailchimp image widths?
There is no maximum image width requirement in Mailchimp. Years ago there was a need to get your images at the exact dimensions before uploading an image to Mailchimp. Nowadays Mailchimp will advise if your image is too wide and will allow you to reduce the width in Mailchimp.
What are the maximum image heights?
There is no maximum image height requirement. Keep in mind that the greater your image dimensions, the greater your image file-size is likely to be (which results in slow loading images).
What file-types are acceptable in Mailchimp?
Images in JPG/JPEG, GIF and PNG file-types are all suitable for use in email campaigns. Avoid using TIFF, BMP, PDF and other filetypes besides those listed previously. Images must be saved with RGB colour profile or mode before uploading to Mailchimp (most images are saved with the RGB colour profile and your image colours won’t display correctly if saved with the CMYK colour mode).
Mailchimp image requirements summary
In summary, here is all you need to know about inserting images into a Mailchimp email campaign:
- Images must be a minimum of 600px wide.
- Image can have any maximum image width (Mailchimp will help reduce the width if needed)
- Images can be any height.
- Image must be GIF, PNG or JPG/JPEG file-types.
Can one re-size an image within Mailchimp. For example if an image comes in and it is too big, can one reduce the size in Mailchimp? I see that the cropping tool crops the image does not shrink to the size of the crop tool?
Resizing will be introduced by Mailchimp soon.
Any further progress on the resizing? Struggling with images since the latest update and the Help section seems to refer to a previous version.
I keep uploading a 600px x 100 image in Mailchimp Image Block. It keeps cutting off the sides of the image to 564. So my image has a shorter width than the text in my content block = urgh! No matter what i do or how I try to edit the dimentions in MailChimps image editor I am unable to upload an image that retains 600width. Please, please, please dear heaven help! Thank you 😀
Hi Tami, are you using a custom template or replicating a past campaign? This can sometimes cause issues. Try to create a new campaign using a Mailchimp layout to see if the problem persists.
