How to resubscribe a ‘Cleaned’ Mailchimp contact

Use this method to resubscribe contacts that have been marked as ‘cleaned’ in your Mailchimp list.

Contacts with a status of cleaned in Mailchimp are those email addresses where Mailchimp has received notification from the recipients email server that the email address does not exist. Unfortunately contacts can occasionally be marked as cleaned where the email address is in fact valid.

Resubscribing a cleaned email address is easily done per the instructions below.

To do:

  1. Login to Mailchimp.
  2. Click Lists.
  3. Click the drop-down menu next to the list you want to work with, and click Signup forms.
  4. Click the Select button next to Form builder.
  5. Copy the Signup form URL and open that URL in your browser.
  6. Submit the email address and any other necessary details using this form.

Note: The only means of changing the status of a contact from cleaned to subscribed is by subscribing the cleaned contact via a Mailchimp hosted form.

I have multiple audience lists (as do we all) in MailChimp. The previously Cleaned email address was added to my general contact list but I am not able to move or copy it to a ‘club only’ audience list from which it was cleaned. How can I do that?

Hi Ed, you aren’t able to move a cleaned contact between Audiences in Mailchimp.

I unsubscribed from a work-related list and I’d to resubscribe. If I understood I have to contact whoever administer the list to resubscribe me? That’s not very practical.

Hi Flavia, you can also resubscribe via a Mailchimp subscribe form.

I made something very very stupid. I imported 4000 contacts with CLEANED status. How can I change the status or delete all and put again with SUB Status ?

The best is to undo the import – https://mailchimp.com/help/undo-contact-import/

We’re a non-profit working with the free version of MailChimp and have a contact that was cleaned and would like to be resubscribed. He apparently had some email issue that has been resolved. I see in previous instructions to resolve this issue that we’re to go to “lists”…I’m unable to find that choice. Is that perhaps not in the free version?

Hey Doug, ‘Lists’ is the old name for Audiences.

Hello, I performed the UNDO action for 2 lists that I imported as ‘cleaned’, but they are still in my contact list and preventing me from re-importing.

Hello, is it possible to update several addresses at the same time so that the status changes from “Cleand” to “Subscribed”? Using “Add Contacts” always results in an error message …

Hi Michi, unfortunately a bulk update won’t change the email marketing status.

    Hello,

What happen with the confirmation email in this case? The user will receive an email with a confirmation link but if they don´t activate it the susbcription process is not done.

No. Because the contact isn’t a new contact they won’t receive the double opt-in email.
