I often get asked how a survey question may be added to the body of a Mailchimp email marketing campaign. In the instructions below, I show a little-known technique for adding a survey question, with pre-defined answers, directly in the email you send. All the recipient needs to do is click on their answer for their response to be recorded.
Please be aware that the technique below does not require you to create a Mailchimp survey (i.e. you don’t need to go through the Mailchimp “create a survey” process).
Time needed: 15 minutes
The instructions below show how simple it is to insert a survey question into a Mailchimp email campaign. Recipients select their answer directly in the email body, and this method does not require the respondent to answer the question on a web page.
- Edit the survey response message
The first step is a one-off. Once the recipient has selected a survey response they are shown a Mailchimp ‘thank you’ page that has the message ‘Thanks for voting!’. The page by default doesn’t look great so it’s worth making it look a bit better.
1. View the contacts in your Mailchimp audience.
2. Click ‘Signup forms’.
3. Click ‘form builder’.
4. Click the ‘Design it’ tab.
5. Style the Signup form for your branding needs (don’t worry – your recipients won’t see the signup form but designing the signup form also designs the thank you page your survey respondents will see).
- Create a Mailchimp email campaign
Create a Mailchimp email campaign as you normally would. When you’ve added your audience, from address and subject line you’ll reach the design stage of your email campaign.
- Add your survey question
Design your email campaign and add the following into a text or paragraph content block where you want the survey to appear (note that I have added the code again at the end of the post just in case you have trouble copying the code here).
Which is your closest capital city?
Amend the question and responses to meet your needs.
- Send your campaign
Once you’ve added content to your email campaign and have tested it, send the marketing campaign to recipients.
- View responses
Once recipients respond to your question, you’ll see the responses in the ‘Analytics 360’ tab of your campaign report.
Below is the survey code that you may copy and paste into Mailchimp.
