How to Auto-Resize an Image in Mailchimp

Mailchimp have introduced a new image editor. Once you’ve uploaded your images to the Mailchimp Content Manager you’ll be able to edit your images using the new image editor. The new image editor is very powerful and has many new features.

Update: This post is outdated. Please see the latest instructions on how to resize images in Mailchimp.

A questions I’ve been asked many times over the past few days is to to use the new auto-resize function. The auto-resize functionality as at the time of publishing this article is a temporary solution. The video below describes how to use the new auto-resize feature for images. Of note is to remember to click the blue check-mark in the image and to click save before closing the image editor.

Note: You’ll know you need to auto-resize if you see the following message in Mailchimp:

We are working on a custom resizing fix – for now, let’s auto-resize

    After completing the steps you’ve listed, and clicking SAVE, my image still appears to be the same size. In the Image pane on the right that shows beside my campaign, it lists the same size as when I imported the image, and hasn’t updated to 1200px like it claims to have inside the image editor. So strange! Any ideas?

    How can I change the image to the size I want it to be? The editor won’t let me pick my own size.

    Would like to hear about how to further reduce the size from 1200 pixels wide! Seems like it will only allow me to crop if I go back in to edit once the auto-sizing is complete.

    Very Frustrated that I can’t resize a picture and I see many others are as well. Almost so much that I’m tempted to change to another mail service. I send emails out daily and this is frustrating. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure it out thinking it was something I was doing. Why would they change something that was not user ready??

    Likewise! The message is telling me I’m going to obliterate email boxes… yet gives me no real option to fix it (anymore- used to be VERY simple and now it seems I can only crop). On December 11th you thought it would be that week… It’s now two weeks later and still nothing? Please do pass this on to them. This is when many of us are sending year-end emails.

      The resizing is live and available; for example if you get the message to reduce the size of an image then click the fix link and Mailchimp will automatically reduce the width to 1200px. Click ‘save’ and the smaller dimensions will be saved.

    I too have tried everything to get the pics for my company’s newsletter to fit (2 pictures for 2 columns of text side by side). I used to just uncheck “Lock Dimensions” and manually change the settings to 450(w) x 270(h). Now, I just can’t get both pictures to be that size so the columns aren’t thrown out of alignment. I even tried to manipulate the pictures with photo editing software before uploading to Mailchimp and that doesn’t work either. This is incredibly frustrating.

    I had the same frustration for 15 minutes, and I’m not sure why someone else hasn’t posted a reply with the solution yet, but I did end up figuring out the new system. All you do is enter in a new width and height in the boxes on the bottom left of the edit screen. They are a greyed out color so it doesn’t look like you can edit the dimensions in the edit screen, but you can. It doesn’t help that after you edit those numbers, the image does not appear to update in any way, but when you click SAVE, the image will reduce in size (if you select smaller dimensions than the auto-size).

    It doesn’t work for us. We are Mac users and have tried using both Safari and Chrome. The old version was plenty good for us and worked. The new tool has at least doubled the time necessary to get out a monthly newsletter. I appreciate the attempt to enhance it but, in our case, there was no need. Can an option be added “Click here to use the classic photo editing tool”?

    I tried posting but it doesn’t look like it updated. You have to choose “custom size” under the common crops. Then deselect the lock dimensions and you will be able to key in your size. You then have to save your changes. I hope this helps!

    Your image resizing tool is confusing.
    It does make the image smaller in terms of pixels; the problem is, the resized image is still automatically rescaled to fit its whole box in the html page.

    So, it just fixes the problem of extremely huge images obliterating inboxes.

    In most cases, however, what your users want is to make an image just appear smaller in its box in the email page.

    When this happens,
    – they try your rescaling function;
    – the image size is reduced. but the image still takes the same room in the email structure;
    – the image also looks worse due to the whole scale-down-scale-up process;

    This is extremely annoying, and it makes your editor almost unusable.
    I would also say that having to specify the width and height in pixels to resize the image is not intuitive at all – but that is an whole separate issue.

    So far the only way to make an image appear smaller seems to be generating a WHOLE NEW IMAGE with larger padding.
    Is this right? (I hope that I am just wrong, otherwise this would be crazy).

    It’s now April 2020, and it’s STILL impossible to resize images in Mailchimp. The official site says choose “Crop or Resize”, then “Custom”, then enter the new dimensions. If you do that, it simply crops the image. There doesn’t seem to be any way of resizing, as other users on here have been saying for over 2 years now. I guess if Mailchimp haven’t bothered fixing this bug in the last two years, there’s no point in holding my breath!
