Back when I was an SEO beginner I recall reading how one must publish a minimum of 400 to 600 words per Page or Post. I do well enough in my target segment in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) and I often Post far less than 400 words. The thing is, there are some solutions that, at first, seem like they should be very complex but are actually incredibly simple to implement and are just so awesomely effective.
The following tutorial is one such example of where in just a few simple instructions one may implement something highly valuable to our customers (and subsequently us).
How to make your Website Phone Number clickable on Smart Phones
One of the most useful things about viewing (properly coded) Websites with Android Smart Phones or Apple iPhones is the ability to click the phone number have the phone dial that number. It’s just so much more simple than trying to remember the number or trying to find a pen. Fortunately there is a clever bit of HTML that enables this features and will work on any HTML Website including WordPress, Joomla and Drupal (these nifty links are called, er, ‘Phone Links‘).
Here are the necessary steps:
- Change this code to your particulars:
<a href="tel:+61-4-1092-3445"> Call Gary, the WordPress Specialist, now </a>
The above code displays as: Call Gary, the WordPress Specialist, now
2. Insert the HTML where you’d like the phone number to appear (you may always use some CSS to style the hyperlink).
Besides Phone Links, there are other phone recognition technologies in play, Google Voice identifies phone numbers in Gmail and Skype has tried to get this right by scanning Webpages for numbers that look like phone numbers. Unfortunately, the Skype’s solution doesn’t work well (try looking at a Website with lots of numeric codes such as an organization that lists part numbers and you’ll see how horribly wrong Skype can get it).
Note: Per RFC2806, ‘On a public HTML page, the telephone number in the URL SHOULD always be in the international form, even if the text of the link uses some local format’.
