Many people setup a Website and wait for visitors to arrive. These same people are then surprised when thousands of visitors don’t magically visit their Site. Millions of Websites are setup each and every day so what makes people visit one Website over another?
Here are items that will greatly improve chances that people will visit your new Website.
Search Engine Optimization
I list SEO first but let’s get our expectations correct; getting Search Engines such as Google and Bing to index and show your Website prominently in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) takes months (if not years). Don’t be fooled by SEO ‘snake-oil salesmen’; there are no quick results from SEO.
SEO is however critical in maintaining momentum of visits in the medium to long-term. For SEO concentrate on the basics such as:
- Quality content (for text make sure that grammar is correct, styles such as headings are used appropriately etc.)
- Quality links to and from your Website
- Fresh content (blogging is great for this)
- Simple to navigate Website content (use a CMS such as WordPress for this)
Social Media holds the possibility of getting awesome exposure and visitors to your new Website in a short space of time. Going ‘viral’ in Social Media however is extremely hard to achieve and very rare but there are ways of getting visits from Social Media. Here are a few ideas:
Linkedin: This service has the potential to provide good quality leads to you and your Website. Add your new Website link to your Linkedin profile and add regular updates to Linkedin with links to recent Blog Posts on your new Website. You may also add a stream from your WordPress Blog to your Linkedin profile that shows your latest Posts/News.
Facebook and Twitter: I’ve grouped these two very significant services as the may be handled in a similar way. Bing Search Engine uses data from these two services as a Search Engine ranking therefore getting everyone you know to Tweet or like your Site is very beneficial. As with Linkedin above, ensure that wherever you can mention your Website in your profile or Wall on these Sites, that you do so.
Google+: Google+ is quickly turning into the most important Social Media service from an SEO perspective. Google has repeatedly noted that they index and use data from Google+ in their Search algorithm. Also, you can easily have your photo showing next to results for your Website in Google Search (ask me if you want to know how).
about.me: This is a free service that takes just minutes to setup. It allows for a simple Online profile. It’s free and quick to use so is well worth using as it may get you a few visitors that you otherwise wouldn’t get.
Of course there are many other good social media services which you should be using to your benefit. These include StumbleUpon, Pinterest and the many other major ‘players’ in this market.
Online Advertising works for some organizations but can also be an expensive ‘waste of time’ for others. The great thing about advertising Online is that with good Online advertising programmes such as Google Adwords or Bing adCenter is that it’s possible to advertise with a small budget. It’s also very quick and simple to start advertising Online with these services.
I’ve done quite a bit of Online advertising for clients and myself on Facebook, Linkedin, Adwords and adCenter and I’ve found results to be best on Adwords and adCenter.
Targeting niche keywords related to your new Website is likely the least costly means of using Online advertising to get visitors to your Website.
Using your Personal networks will likely yield the greatest number of visits for the least (or no) cost. Here are some ideas in this regard:
- Ask your work colleagues to visit your new Site and ask them to tell people they know about your Site.
- Add a link to your email signature with your Website URL.
- Belong to a Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, golf club or any other club? Ask for a mention in the club newsletter or even for a notice on the noticeboard?
- If your local area has a public noticeboard then add your new Website and description to the noticeboard.
- When talking to other parents at school functions then mention your new Website and encourage people to visit it.
- Create business cards with a QR code linking to your Website.
There really are many things that can be done to promote awareness of your new Website. The items above are just a start.
