I have used Dropbox for many years to share files online. I sync my Dropbox files to my Microsoft Windows PCs which typically works very well.
One issue that I happened to come across today was that certain files saved to a Dropbox folder weren’t being synced to my laptop (running Windows 10). This is the first time in all my years that this has happened to me.
Here is how I resolved the problem:
- In Firefox browser go to the Dropbox Incompatible Files and Folders utility (you’ll need to sign in to Dropbox if not already logged in).
- In a separate tab in Firefox go to dropbox.com.
- For each file or folder listed in the Dropbox Incompatible Files and Folders utility (per step 1 above), rename the file or folder using acceptable characters. Reserved characters that may not be used in filenames are:
- < (less than)
- > (greater than)
- : (colon)
- ” (double quote)
- / (forward slash)
- \ (backslash)
- | (vertical bar or pipe)
- ? (question mark)
- * (asterisk)
Your renamed files will now sync to your Windows PC.
Please note that in the instructions above I recommend using Firefox as, for me, this was the only browser where I could just remove the reserved characters from file names rather than have to retype the entire file name when renaming.
