You may have a need to redirect all traffic to a domain onto another domain. As an example, I started out as a WordPress front-end-developer using my own name but business grew and so my trading name and domain changed. Luckily, the only technical knowledge you need in order to forward your visitors to a new domain is how to transfer files using FTP.
Below are instructions to create an HTTP 301 redirect so that visitors to a domain are immediately forwarded to another domain; all according to SEO best practice. Google recommends using an .htaccess file to redirect and the instructions below follow this recommendation.
Instructions to 301 Redirect for best SEO
Follow the steps below which will only take a couple of minutes and then your domain will redirect to the domain of your choosing.
- Open a text editor such as Notepad++, Windows Notepad or TextEdit.
- Save the file to your computer as .htaccess (this is the full file name).
- Add and save the following to the empty text file (change
http://www.example.com/to the URL that you want visitors to be redirected to):
Redirect 301 / http://www.example.com/
- Using FTP, transfer the file that we’ve just created to the root directory of your domain that you want redirected (this will usually be the public_html directory on your webserver).
That’s all there is to it. You have now redirected website visitors from one domain to another all using Google recommended best practice.
