Since starting to use the Ubuntu Linux distribution (desktop version) a few months ago I have been nothing but extremely impressed. I really can’t understand why the Australian Government isn’t using the Ubuntu Operating System and is instead is likely paying over the top, with taxpayers money, for propriety Operating Systems. The learning curve for most people migrating to Ubuntu from Windows or Apple OS will be low. Also, for people that think that free software isn’t as reliable or easy to use as paid-for software then you really need to try Ubuntu.
I was interested to see that the French Gendarmerie has calculated that moving to Ubuntu has lowered the total cost of ownership by €2 million per year (they currently have 37,000 desktop computers running Ubuntu). This organization is embracing the productivity and cost benefits of open source software by using other notable software such as Mozilla Firefox, Open Office, Mozilla Thunderbird and VLC media player.
If you haven’t yet tried Ubuntu then give it a go. It’s awesome.
