With the rise of mobile computing in the form of tablets and smart-phones, people have come to question the ability of Microsoft to compete. The major products of Microsoft have been Office and Windows. Google Apps is gaining ground in popularity (fast and because it is a great set of services) mostly to the detriment of Office. In terms of Windows, Apple and Google have found a massive market in mobile devices. So what has happened to Microsoft?
Here are two areas that could catapult Microsoft into the lead once again.
Plan 1: Create a new blockbuster product
Microsoft made a strategic and important move a few years back by entering the gaming market. Gaming is massive and revenues are generated by the console developers in licensing as well as hardware. Gaming also involves a networked environment and cutting edge technology.
By investing significant resources into Xbox, Microsoft have developed a product that is being used for all sorts of things from gaming to using computers with gestures to uses in space craft. Kinect is going to be a very big and important product.
Plan 2: Winning the mobile OS war
In 2012 Microsoft is getting very serious about gaining market share with Windows Mobile. Microsoft believes that it can take on Google Android and Apple iOS and win. Windows mobile is going to have to offer something very special in order for people to choose it over Android or iOS.
These are just two areas that Microsoft is targeting. I’m convinced that Kinect derivatives will be hugely popular. Microsoft is far from beaten.
