AWS is now ten years old. It seems incredible that this amazing set of services didn’t exist only ten (and a bit) years back. One wonders if Netflix, Airbnb, Pinterest, Freshdesk, Spotify and others would even exist without the flexibility and range of services that AWS offers.
AWS enables organizations of all sizes, including startups, to use technology that was previously only available at prohibitively high costs. For example Amazon Elastic Transcoder allows for converting media files such as video into multiple formats that is compatible with the many devices that people use every day. Amazon Elastic Transcoder is available for any of us to transcode even small files at an affordable price; we don’t have to be a multi million dollar brand.
Perhaps you have a need for a few hours of GPU intensive computing? Amazon EC2 G2 instances provide fantastic NVIDIA GPU processing (back when it was viable I performed a bit of Bitcoin mining using EC2 instances). Perhaps you want to send transactional emails from your Magento, Shopify or WordPress website very reliably but at a low price? Amazon SES is the answer.
AWS was (and still is) revolutionary is making large-scale and specialized computing and network facilities available to the smallest of organizations at affordable prices.
Happy Birthday AWS.
