Clean your own subscriber list
Here are three tips that will greatly improve the chance of your subscriber list being accepted by Mailchimp.
Role-based email addresses
Role-based email addresses are those addresses that are usually shared by multiple people. Examples include; accounts@example.com, sales@example.com and webmaster@example.com. Mailchimp won’t allow role-based email addresses to be imported into lists as email campaigns sent to these email addresses have a high chance of being incorrectly marked as spam.
Remove all your role-based email subscribers before trying to import into your Mailchimp list. Should you be absolutely sure that a certain role-based email won’t be marked as spam by the recipient you can always add role-based email addresses to your list one by one.
Gmail and Hotmail addresses
This is a tough one but free email addresses aren’t considered as good quality addresses. When people subscribe to your list try to get them to provide their work email address.
People often ask why Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, Bigpond, iCloud and other free email addresses are considered low quality. The answer I provide is that almost every spam or phishing email sent originates from a free email address; think of every Nigerian scam or viagra email you’ve received and chances are, they have been sent from a free email address.
Removing free email addresses from your list prior to importing will improve the quality of your subscriber list.
Old email addresses
Unless you’ve purchased a list of email addresses (which you shouldn’t waste your time doing), the biggest reason for Omnivore errors being triggered are email addresses that no longer are valid.
If you haven’t send a campaign for a few months or collected email addresses awhile back, chances are that a proportion of your subscriber email addresses are no longer valid. Unfortunately there is no simple means of finding out if a large number of email addresses are still valid but contact me if you need assistance.
What Mailchimp Omnivore looks for
There are many things that Mailchimp looks for when determining the quality of your imported subscribers. The three items listed above will help with basic Omnivore issues. In the main, Mailchimp wants to make sure that you aren’t spamming and that your sent email campaigns aren’t marked as spam.
