The title is catchy and strangely enough it’s true that my Website visitors increased by about 100 daily instantly. There are hundreds of factors that Google, Bing and other Search Engines take into consideration when ranking where Webpages appear in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). We know that things like having quality links pointing to a Website and making Websites simple to navigate are SEO ranking factors.

What is often overlooked in SEO analysis is considering if our permalinks and titles attract people to click on out results in the SERPs. A title like Get a free Website will always attract more people to click than Spend over $5000 and get a website thrown in. In Google Adwords (as I expect in organic Search Engine rankings), the proportion of times a person clicks an advert as opposed to how often an ad is shown is measured and is influential as to the ad placement (i.e. advert placement is about more than just paying the highest cost per click).

Anyway, back to the relevance of this title of the post and how my visitor numbers increased; my domain name was eckstein.id.au and I was getting frustrated with people constantly asking what the domain extension .id.au was all about so I decided to change my domain and trading name. My new domain name is organicweb.com.au and, for whatever reason, my visitor numbers have increased as has the time spent on the Site in addition to a higher proportion of repeat visitors. Of course I made sure that all 301 redirects were in place and so on therefore making navigation simple for the Search Engines.

Just a simple domain name change and Website analytics look better. Contact me if you need help in moving your WordPress Website to a new domain or host.

One rather strange and annoying characteristic of using ClickBank to sell products or services (i.e. as a vendor) is that there there isn’t an instant email notifying the seller of a sale. Of course this doesn’t matter too much if selling a digital or other downloadable product but it really matters if the vendor needs to do something manually to provide the product or service (e.g. a WordPress premium install service).

ClickBank vendor emails with WordPress

If you, like tens of millions of other people, use WordPress to power your Website then there is a very simple solution. Installing a Plugin that enables ClickBank sale emails and performing a few steps at clickbank.com is all that is needed.

Install and activate the ClickBank Sale Notification Plugin on your WordPress Site.

Login to ClickBank and go to Settings -> My Site.

Click Edit in the Advanced Tools section.

Enter a secret key of 16 characters (numbers and uppercase letters).

Request access to the API and then enter http://YOUR-DOMAIN/notify.php in the Instant Notification URL and select 2.1 as the version.

From the WordPress Dashboard go to Settings -> Clickbank Sale and enter the necessary information and click Save Options.

It’s worth performing a test purchase of your ClickBank product to ensure that you are now receiving emails when a product is purchased.

ClickBank vendor emails with using PHP

For those not using WordPress there is an option to use a simple PHP script (that uses similar functionality to the WordPress solution). I haven’t tested this solution but head on over to the ClickScoop Website to check it out.

There we go, you now know how to Set-up Email notifications for ClickBank Sales.

Using a Samsung Galaxy S2 or S3 and getting the error ”Unfortunately, Touchwiz home has stopped”? Fortunately there is a simple way to solve the problem.

What devices are affected?

I use a Samsung Galaxy S2 on the Virgin Mobile network in Australia and recently updated to Android version 4.1.2. Once upgraded the Touchwiz error kept showing and the phone became unusable (I believe that the Touchwiz problem also occurs when running Android 4.2/Jelly Bean). This seems like a common problem with Samsung Galaxy phones on almost all Australian mobile networks (Optus, Telstra, Vodafone).

What is Samsung Touchwiz?

Touchwiz is the Samsung user interface. This means that it is Samsung developed software (i.e. not part of Google Android itself). Here is a video describing Touchwiz:

Instructions to get rid of the error

Here are the steps to take to fix the problem (on a Galaxy S2 although I’m sure it’s fairly similar for an S3):

Go to Settings.

Under Device click Home screen mode.

Select Easy mode.

Click Apply.

That’s all. The ”Unfortunately, Touchwiz home has stopped” should no longer appear but if you still have problems then install the Nova Launcher App from Google Play and this will be used on your phone instead of Touchwiz.

I often get asked the question, is it worth advertising Online? Generally small businesses and individuals are referring to Google Adwords , Bing Ads or Yahoo Search Marketing and specifically to the text adverts that appear in the Search Results Pages (SERPs).

There is no simple yes/no answer as to whether someone should advertise using the Search Engines. The potential benefits all relate down to a few simple calculations.

Conversion rates

Assuming that the goal of your landing Page (the Webpage you choose people to land on when they click the advert) is for visitors to buy something then we need to know the following; how many visitors to the Webpage does it take for there to be a sale? This is called the conversion rate. A good landing Page gets about a 1% conversion rate i.e. it takes 100 visitors to get a single sale.

Customer lifetime value

Now it’s needed to calculate how much a customer is worth to you (life-time value (LTV) of the customer). The lifetime value of a customer can be difficult to calculate but it’s important not to overstate the value; the aim is to use advertising to make money so you shouldn’t be spending more on advertising than you make from it (of course we should really take cash flow into consideration here). The LTV is the average profit or loss from a single customer. LTV is relatively simple to calculate for once-off purchases but for repeat customers and subscription products it’s more difficult.

What is the maximum Cost to Acquire a Customer (CAC)

As we know what the life-time value of a customer is, we can estimate how much we can spend to get a new customer (i.e. what our cost to acquire a customer (CAC) can be).

Using a very simple example, suppose that the average customer buys twice from you and the total profit is $100 over the two purchases. You could then spend $100 to gain a new customer – your CAC could be $100 (yes, I know this is very simplistic but you get the point ).

How to Calculate the Costs Per Click (CPC)

So, how much should you spend on Online advertising? CPC is how much you can afford to spend each time someone clicks on our advert (Google, Bing and other ad networks allow you to specify a maximum amount you want to spend on each click).

We know, as described above, what our conversion rates should be (about 1%) and how much we could spend on a new customer acquisition through the CAC calculation therefore our calculation is as simple as:

CAC x Conversion Rate = Cost Per Click

Using an example:

Maximum CAC = $150

Conversion rate = 1%

$150 x 1% = $1.50 (we can afford to spend $1.50 per click).

There are many other things that can be done to improve our conversion rates (such as better landing Page design) as well as other things. Contact me to discuss how you can grow your business through Online advertising.
